The mission of the Mental Health Association is to promote mental health, with the integration of physical healthcare, to improve the care and treatment of individuals with mental illness, and to remove the stigma associated with mental health disorders and addictions. As a community organization, we accomplish our mission through advocacy, education, prevention, early intervention, treatment and service.

Message from the CEO

The Mental Health Association (MHA) continued its strong focus on the recovery, safety and mental health needs of consumers and their families in fiscal year 2024.

MHA exceeded its service and quality expectations while remaining in a strong financial position. The agency operated in a financially sound manner while advancing its mission of providing services to individuals and their families regardless of their ability to pay.

Emergency Assistance

One week before the Christmas holiday, our Community Support Services (CSS) team encountered a dire situation affecting several of our clients living in Newark. Due to water damage and a collapsed roof, five individuals were facing homelessness. Immediately, our CSS team sprung into action without hesitation.

Comprehensive Support

An individual walked through our doors seeking guidance because they weren’t sure about what assistance they needed. Initially, they were in search of information and referral services. Little did they know, their journey with us would lead to a transformative experience that touched multiple aspects of their life.

ARRIVE

ARRIVE Together Formally Launches in Morris County
The ARRIVE (Alternative Responses to Reduce Instances of Violence & Escalation) Together program, introduced by the New Jersey State Police, recognizes the importance of addressing mental health concerns with compassion, understanding, and specialized expertise. The initiative seeks to help police de-escalate situations, provide immediate support to individuals in crisis, and ensure the safety of both the community and the responding officers.

88 Individuals Housed!
Over the past year, MHA’s Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (PATH) Essex and Morris County programs have assisted 88 individuals in transitioning from the street or shelter into permanent housing.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill's Roundtable Discussion
Thank you to a host of justice system and law enforcement officials from Essex and Morris County for joining Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill's roundtable discussion on Improving Mental Healthcare in Criminal Justice Settings on May 13. The discussion explained plans to provide $100 million in grants in the coming year to improve mental health resources for incarcerated individuals and support their reintegration into the community.

Co-Response Is Now In South Orange!
MHA’s Co-Response program has officially launched in South Orange! Co-Response delivers crisis response in collaboration with local police departments, ensuring that individuals in a mental health related crisis feel safe and get the support they need in order to stabilize.

MHA's Senior Director of Programs, Dr. Rose Brown, and Program Director for Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness in Morris County (PATH) Viktorija Spasova, met with Mayor James Dodd of Dover and Commissioner Tayfun Selen along with other organizations in the community such as Zufall, Morris County Hispanic Affairs, Catholic Charities, and Hope House, to discuss homelessness and public intoxication solutions efforts.

Listening Benches at MHA
MHA was proud to be gifted two “Listening Benches” with planters from a Verona High School who handmade each bench as part of his Eagle Scout project. The concept of the Listening Bench is to combat loneliness, which we know loneliness can lead to very poor mental health outcomes.
